Kailash Manasarovar Pilgrimage (Divine Kailash and Himavat Four Kailash Darshan)
Trip Overview
“As the dew is dried up by the morning sun, so are the sins of human beings by the sight of Mt. Kailash and Lake Manasarovar.”
Skanda Purana
“Kailash Manasarovar Yatra” is a signature yatra of Karnali Excursions where the journey undertakes the traveller guiding the seeker towards an inward transformation. The holy Mt. Kailash is regarded as Mt. Meru (axis mundi) by four living religious traditions of the ancient human civilizations: Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and, Bon. According to Vedic Sanatan tradition (Hinduism), Mt. Kailash is the axis mundi of the universe which is the abode of Lord Shiva, as described in the Skanda Purāṇa and the Kailāśa Saṁhitā. At its feet lies Lake Manasarovara, believed to have been conceived in the mind of Lord Brahma, where a single holy bath is believed to dissolve lifetimes of karmic residue and open the path toward moksha. In the Buddhist tradition, this holy mountain is revered as the earthly abode of Demchok (Chakrasamvara) residing on the top of the peak with his consort Dorje Phagmo. The Jain tradition believes that the first Tirthankara Rishabhnath attained enlightenment at the Ashtapada. The Bon tradition calls it Yungdrung Gutseg (Nine-Stacked Swastika Mountain) and believes that it is the abode of powerful protecting deities. Four great rivers of of Asia (Indus, Sutlej, Brahmaputra, and Karnali) originate from this sacred mandala.
The Yatra begins in Kathmandu, the gateway of the Himalayas, before a scenic flight lifts pilgrims into Lhasa, the heart of Tibet. Here, amid the golden roofs of the Potala Palace, the earthen architecture of the Jokhang Temple, and the resonant chants of monks at Sera and Ganden Monasteries, the body begins its quiet acclimatization while the spirit begins its quiet awakening. From Lhasa, the path unfolds overland through Shigatse and Tingri, past the towering silhouette of Everest, across the windswept expanse of Dongba/Saga, each mile drawing the pilgrim closer to the sacred Kailash-Manasarovar Maṇḍala. The journey finds its true purpose at the parikrama: the sacred circumambulation of Kailash, Manasarovar, and Tirthapuri, the path consecrated by generations of sages, seekers, and devotees who have walked it before, each step an offering, each breath a prayer.
For nearly three decades, Karnali Excursions has travelled this path alongside pilgrims from every corner of the world, refining logistics, easing hardships, and safeguarding what matters most: the sanctity of the experience itself. Since 1997, our pilgrimage leaders, guides, and Tibet-trained operators have devoted themselves to a single purpose, ensuring that every traveller who sets forth from Kathmandu returns being permanently transformed and blessed by Kailash for lifetime. This is a Yatra designed with particular understanding and care for all the followers of Sanatan tradition, those who carry the memory of Kailash in their upbringing, their scriptures, and their longing, wherever in the world they may reside. Every arrangement, from Vedic rites at Pashupatinath to the safety and comfort of accommodation along the route, has been thoughtfully woven to honour that inherited devotion. More than a journey across geography, this is a passage across the self, where cultural immersion, spiritual discipline, and the authentic, humbling majesty of the Himalayas converge into a single unbroken current. The mountains do not change. But those who circle them, quite often, do.
