Mount Everest is hidden behind its immediate satellite peaks of Nuptse, Lhotse and Lhotse Shar and does not come into view until we begin to approach Namche Bazaar. It is not really until after Namche that the spectacular and massive summit of Everest can be clearly seen.

In Namche Bazaar the colorful and lively Saturday market provides us a glimpse of the commercial center of the Solu-Khumbu region, and further along the trail we come to Tengboche Monastery, the spiritual center of Solu-Kumbu. Here we gain some understanding of the lives of the monks living here and the Himalayan Buddhist way of life. Many expeditions aiming for the summit of Everest request blessings from the Lamas here, and prayers for safe passage ad successful summiting.

Although Everest remains the focal point of the trek to Base Camp, the trail is surrounded on all sides by many other peaks of varying altitude and grandeur, all formidable summits in their own right. The grandeur of the world’s highest mountain is best appreciated when we reach Gorak Shep.
